Understanding Deciles
Deciles divide data into 10 equal parts:
- D₁ = 10th percentile
- D₂ = 20th percentile
- D₅ = 50th percentile (median)
- D₉ = 90th percentile
Formulas
Ungrouped Data: $$D_i = \text{Value of } \left(\frac{i(n+1)}{10}\right)^{th} \text{ observation}$$
Grouped Data (Discrete): $$D_i = \left(\frac{i \cdot N}{10}\right)^{th} \text{ value}$$
Grouped Data (Continuous): $$D_i = l + \left(\frac{\frac{iN}{10} - F_<}{f}\right) \times h$$
Where:
- i = decile number (1-9)
- n = number of observations
- N = total frequency
- l = lower limit of decile class
- F< = cumulative frequency before decile class
- f = frequency of decile class
- h = class width
Interpretation
| Decile | Percentile | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| D₁ | 10th | 10% of data falls below this value |
| D₂ | 20th | 20% of data falls below this value |
| D₅ | 50th | 50% of data falls below this value (median) |
| D₉ | 90th | 90% of data falls below this value |
